New Blog: Bible Software and Interpretation

In this blog (which I will be updating every week) I will be discussing how the use of Bible software can affect Bible interpretation. The discussions draw from my years of work at BibleWorks, plus my time as a pastor, seminary professor, and seminary student.

Update problem

I've been at 10.0.8.667 (MCW 10-43) for a few weeks without seeing an update. If I do Help > Check for Updates, no recommended or optional updates are shown. This is surprising because there are a number of foreign language Bible updates I haven't installed because I don't know the language. Is there a problem with the update server?

BW 10 installation on Macbook Pro

I've got BW10 & have just taken delivery of a new Macbook Pro. (Prior to this I had installed it on my Windows 10 laptop).

Can I just install it on the Mac from the flash drive or is there anything I need to do as well?

I had posted this question some weeks ago but had no reply. With BibleWorks now having closed there is nowhere else for me to go.

Bibleworks 9 Mac activation

Hello! I have a rather interesting situation. I am tech support worker at a seminary and we have a new student who was using Bibleworks 9 before their computer died. They were using a PC and now they have a Mac without the original installation media CD/USB. However, they have the entire program with all of their saved data on an external hard drive. I used a program called Virtual Box to create a Windows 10 runtime environment where the program could be installed and used and it works until the point of activation. Either the Bibleworks 9 server is not responding to the ping of the program from my end, or my Virtual Box program is not allowing the ping to happen to your server. It is asking for a manual Activation and if I have all the data for it. Who can I contact or what should I do?

Greek and Hebrew texts are showing up as weird English characters

I just transferred my BW program from old laptop to new one.
The program itself seems to be operational. I use it every week in sermon prep, with parallel texts in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, English & Spanish.
But GNT and WTT which I used before, now are unreadable. They are definitely not Greek and Hebrew!
Since I operate other programs like Nota Bene with the Biblical text databases on this laptop, and have the keyboards and fonts activated in Windows 10, I don´t think it´s a computer problem. What should I do? I have relied on this parallel line up!

Unable to Load BW10

The loading screen goes all the way to 'registered' and then program disappears. I've tried every option to fix the files. CRC says it refreshed. I reloaded the executables and finally removed and reinstalled BW10 twice, but it does the same thing. I ran repair on Windows 10 as well. Finally I...

Activations "used up." BW10 activation denied.

"You have used up the available activations for this ID." That's the message I'm receiving.

I've had to reinstall and activate BW10 a handful of times within VirtualBox on a new MacBook Pro. But when I now try to “Activate by Internet,” a dialog box appears stating the following: “Activation over the Internet failed. Please attempt manual activation.” So I attempt manual activation but receive the message: “You have used up the available activations for this ID. Please contact Customer Service.”

I’ve been using BibleWorks (BW) on Mac computers (by means of virtualization) since 2002 but have not encountered this problem before.

I’ll be profoundly thankful if anyone can provide the solution. (I have also sent an e-mail on this matter to Customer Service.)

Problem with BW shutting down

I have discovered a problem that was not present before BW was discontinued. When I click on "Open/Close Search Window" in the Browse Window my program shuts down. There are a couple of other items that does the same thing. Has anyone had this problem?

Hello friends, Iv'e had Bibleworks 10, for a couple of years. My old computer crashed and I can't find my old code so I can install on new computer. Is there anyway to get a replacment code? Blessings

If you are reading this and you do not have your BW activation codes backed up, please do it now.

Have one copy that is separate from the computer that it is installed on.

Have another copy of the codes that is at a different location - a safety deposit box, at work, at a friend's house.

There were warnings issued before BW closed that it was essential to have activation codes backed up.

If you have not backed them up, you can open BibleWorks.

Select File | Activate Database

In the Activation Manager Window that opens click on Options (near the bottom)

A "Save As" window opens and the BW10Serials.txt file can be saved. Make a copy of the file on a flash drive. Print another copy and store it in a different location.

Do not store the file in the cloud unless it is securely encripted. If the cloud drive was compromised and the codes were in plain text, they could be pirated which could result in the code being invalidated and you would no longer be able to use it to activate a new installation of BW.

Unable to Load BW10

OK! Something I learned a long time ago and completely forgot: always download the zip file to your hard drive before you install it!.... duh! otherwise your run the risk of corrupt files . I was installing from an external hard drive to where I downloaded the iso file in the first place! oh well, old enough to know better and too old to care!

I just found a typo in WTT Deu 7:8.

Even though I have the Greek keyboard up when I type in the search bar Greek letters they appear in English. How do I fix it? Also, is there a way to look up specific Greek words in the Greek Paradigm section? Thanks.

For some reason, my Greek keyboard quit displaying Greek letters on the search bar. So, I am unable to look up Greek words. Does anyone know the solution to this problem? Thanks for your help.

Easy way to manually sort search results into different lists/categories?

Hi all, I was curious if there is any easy way to sort the search results into related meanings. I figure it will have to be done manually, but right now I've been using a pen and paper to group related scriptures. So, for example, if I do a search of ἅγιος (holy) and want to make a list of everywhere that it is used of the holy spirit, another list of everywhere it is used as "saints," and another list where it is simply used as an adj, is there a simple way of doing this? I've tried using check boxes, but that only allows compiling one list, and then I have to start over with the full list again once I've picked out the ones I want. Thanks in advance for any creative suggestions!

A reoccurance of an old problem: How to solve the ordered not Word boxes problem?

Dear remaining friends of BW,

I friend and I created a search query where we wanted to list all instances of modifiying words (mainly phasal verbs - see my word list in the word box - you can have it - or add further ones) in conection with a participle (in the nominative case as it should not modify objects as GcPs, DcPs or AcPs) but the subject. This should go according to the following pattern "begin/stop/maintain etc. doing something". My query file has two parts, connected with an OR-Box in the middle. Left is the phrase "Eu or kalws + poiew" which as modyfiing phrase takes pariciples (surly a better solution is possible) with the participle and on the right side a box with the modifiing phasal words (if you know more - you may be so friendly to add them) with a participle in the nominative (and the Pariciple and the phasal verb agree in number to reduce false hits).

So far so good. Now we wanted to optimize your query and rule out hits as διέλιπεν ὁ τρέχων (Jer 8.6 - an article before the participle) to get a improved search file - now, and that problem follows me as long as I can remember - I cant teach the ASE to rule out definite articles before the participle as I don`t want to have participles used as nouns. Whatever we did in the right section of the query (e.g. use a box with definite articles - negate this box within 2-3 words before the participle) and now the problem comes - I cant get away such hits as Jer 8.6 - I had this problem in former queries as well. It seems that in ordered structures one cannot have not-boxes. If that is the case - ok. than it is as it is, if I am wrong - I would beg you for help - maybe someone is still there from former BW days. Any other improvements are welcome!
